Hatra, 17 miles West of the main road Baghdad - Mosul, is a chain in the great Arab cities of among others Palmyra (Syria), Petra (Jordan) and Baalbek (Lebanon). Originated in the 3rd century B.C., nowadays in an absolute desolate area. Before the 2nd Gulf war of 1991 the Iraqi government did much restoration work, but at present only a guard watches the city, preventing it from being plundered.
